This is a center piece for my kitchen that I made. It was originally a flat and wavy platform with patterns on it, but as the clay was drying, the ends broke off. I decided to change the structure and make a canoe looking sculpture. It was harder to construct this idea than the first one but I surprisingly didn't have any problems with cracking or parts breaking. It wasn't what I wanted at first but the end result made me love it. With this design I can put things in the canoe to decorate it for the fall season. I can put little decorative pumpkins and leave to create an autumn look, or I can simply put fruits inside of the canoe for the summer feel. The color of the canoe fits perfectly for any season.
Building this was a challenge. I had to constantly monitor to make sure it wasn't bending, falling apart, or cracking. To start of with I made the walls of the canoe, which was a crescent-looking shape. Then, after it was a bit harder, I started to mold those two pieces together and attach a clay bottom to it. I had to flip the canoe upside down, so that the walls of the canoe wouldn't bend outwards and fall, and also I had to put a foam support on the inside so that the bottom of the canoe wouldn't gape down. After it was dry I flipped it right side up to dry some more and then it was baking, glazing, and done!
